The Story of Today's Mains

The Mains were formed in the fall of 2003 as a way to help the City of Trenton, Illinois celebrate its Sesquicentennial in 2005. The idea was to form, fund, and equip a vintage base ball team to help the city celebrate its 150th birthday. With the Sesquicentennial Committee’s support and volunteer efforts, the Mains started to gain momentum and began to take shape.

A Sports Trivia Night was held and the proceeds from that event along with private contributions and initial funding from the committee was enough money to buy bats, balls, and vintage uniforms. Players and other helpful club members have since joined those ranks as word spread of the Mains. In the spring of 2004, the first practice was held and a slate of six matches are schedule for 2004.
The Mains are a combination of several aspects of vintage base ball. The name comes from a team that played in Trenton in the 1890’s - who named themselves after the town's Main Street. The uniforms are styled after those worn in the area around 1880. The rules under which the games will be played are those from the 1860’s. Anyway you slice it, the Mains are vintage!
The Mains story is one of local history and a celebration of Trenton’s baseball past. The hope of the Mains is to re-create base ball as it was in the mid 1800’s. Today’s Mains want you to see them play and to come away from the experience feeling as if you have just witness history in action. Furthermore, the Mains aim to represent the city and citizens of Trenton at the events they are asked to participate in.
