MATCH RECAP: May 14, 2005 - vs. St. Louis Unions - Florissant, Missouri
Mains Victorious in Season Openers
The Mains vintage base ball team won its first two matches of the year. The Trenton team plays by the rules of the late 1800’s and on the day that the city of Trenton celebrated it’s 150th birthday, the team was twice victorious.
The Mains were formed to help the city remember and celebrate its early days. The team will play at several local events during the year to help spread the word of Trenton’s 150 years as a city. Highlighting the Mains schedule in 2005 is the June 25th Founders Cup in Trenton. The Founders Cup event will be played on June 25th as part of the town’s Sesquicentennial Celebration. The Cup will feature four vintage games played by experienced vintage teams from St. Louis and Danville Il., as well as the Mains.
In last Saturday’s match, played 150 years to the day that the city was founded, the Mains beat the Unions of Florissant, Missouri by scores of 14 to 6 and 11 to 6. Both nines played with much ginger and gave their all for the city’s from which they carry the banner. The days umpire 'Scribe' Slover levied several fines. In total, $1.75 was collected in 25 cent fines, most were for curse words uttered in frustration, two bits was fined to a Unions player for a dress code violation and the umpire fined himself for spitting.
Everyone was saddened to see that a Unions player, 'Dizzy' Lurk, injured himself during the first game. Dizzy not only broke one of vintage ball’s basic rules, that being no diving, the dive he took also broke his arm. He was escorted off the field and into a waiting buggy to the sounds of “Hip, hip huzzah” which was cheered in his direction by all of the other ballists. A stirring sight indeed!
The Mains of Trenton who did the city most proud were many. Gary 'Crash' Crouch, and Keiren 'Corndog' Zeisset both had big days striking. 'Hambone' Kesner and 'Peanut' Kohlbrecher each had big knocks in the first game as well.
Three of the newest Mains, Daron 'Sarge' Steenbergen, Clint 'Moonshine' Maue, and Marshall 'Dillion' Shaw gave their best efforts on the sodden field on this day as well. Rich 'Boomer' Ritzheimer made his presence known as well. 'Boomer' dispensed his ball expertise throughout the day and also by chipping in with a nice 4 for 8 day at the dish. All in all it was a glorious and spirited day of base ball in the style and manners of 1860. |
